National Weeds Program Impact of Environmental Weeds on Biodiversity: a Review and Development of a Methodology

چکیده
FOREWORD The impact of environmental weeds on the natural environment is an area that has been little studied in Australia. More often than not, impact is assumed rather than quantified. If the impact of environmental weeds on nature conservation values is not quantitatively assessed before a control program is begun, valuable resources can be wasted. For instance, how would it be possible to determine the level at which the weed invasion has a negligible impact on the natural environment? This is a critical question when you are considering investing resources towards the control of environmental weeds. Key questions that need to be asked before control programs are undertaken for environmental weeds include determining the impact of weeds on native species and ecosystem functions, the threshold densities at which there is little or no impact of the weed on conservation values, and what factors can be manipulated to reduce that impact. This report reviews the impact of environmental weeds on biodiversity values and assesses the techniques used in various quantitative studies. It provides a standardised methodology incorporating experimental design and data analysis options that address the above questions. This publication is a comprehensive document providing excellent material for future research and planning for environmental weed management. It is an invaluable contribution to the area of impact assessment and I hope it will be considered an important tool for use by all agencies and individuals concerned with biodiversity conservation.

Response of Poaceous Weeds in Wheat to Post-Emergence Herbicides
Poaceous weeds are prolific and competitive in winter crops, but they are more insidious in wheat due to their similar morphology and growing requirements. Herbicides are effective and efficient tools of weed management, however, they are vulnerable to resistance, and herbicides with different modes of action might check the dominance of a particular weed flora. The current study was undertaken...

Application of intercropping systems is one of the ecological methods for controlling weeds due to maximization of soil cover and plant diversity. In order to study the effect of intercropping system of indigo (Indigofera tinctoria L.) and roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) on biodiversity, weeds population changes and plant yield an experiment was conducted based on randomized complete block des...
متن کاملControlling weeds with fungi, bacteria and viruses: a review
Weeds are a nuisance in a variety of land uses. The increasing prevalence of both herbicide resistant weeds and bans on cosmetic pesticide use has created a strong impetus to develop novel strategies for controlling weeds. The application of bacteria, fungi and viruses to achieving this goal has received increasingly great attention over the last three decades. Proposed benefits to this strateg...
متن کاملAmelioration of biodiversity impacts of genetically modified crops: predicting transient versus long-term effects.
It has been suggested that genetically modified herbicide-tolerant crops may benefit biodiversity because spraying of crops may be delayed until later in the growing season, allowing weeds to grow during the early part of the year. This provides an enhanced resource for arthropods, and potentially benefits birds that feed on these. Thus, this technology could enhance biodiversity. Using a revie...
متن کاملWhat’s a Weed? Knowledge, Attitude and Behaviour of Park Visitors about Weeds
Weeds are a major threat to biodiversity globally degrading natural areas of high conservation value. But what are our attitudes about weeds and their management including weeds in national parks? Do we know what a weed is? Do we consider weeds a problem? Do we support their management? Are we unintentionally spreading weeds in parks? To answer these questions, we surveyed visitors entering a l...
